Anyone who is involved with front office operations of a school  are encouraged to attend this conference. This Conference is a great way to get updates on legal requirements associated with dealing with children and their guardians, share helpful hints with other office professionals about effectively operating an office, and network with colleagues from across Virginia while gaining valuable knowledge to take back to your school division!   

 

SPEAKERS

 

Jason Ballum, Associate, Reed Smith, LLC

"Legal Information for Educational Support Staff"
Jason’s practice focuses on education law, including the representation of school boards in disputes regarding special education matters.  He has also worked on a variety of other matters involving school boards, including issues arising out of employment, tort, and constitutional law.  General confidentiality issues will be among his points of discussion.

 

Kelly Decker

"Money Strategies for Tough Times"

This session is designed to help people find security while navigating through the hazards of market downturns and times of economic uncertainty. Attendees will learn effective steps to take and important mistakes to avoid in times such as these. Topics covered will include The Macro Asset Perspective, avoiding market timing pitfalls, planning for more tough times, and fluctuating asset reallocation. Dr. Kelly Decker is committed to providing individuals, families, and businesses with insurance and investment options that meet their needs. She keeps up with current insurance and financial product trends. Dr. Decker has her own company that operates in the Richmond area titled Money Management Educators (MME).

 

Mary A. Barham

"Fitting It All In and Still Being Productive"
Mary Barham serves as the Finance Technician at Thoreau middle School and currently serves as the Chairman of the Support Services Employees’ Advisory Council (SSEAC), the Vice Chairman of the “Office Personnel Advisory Council” (OPAC), a member on the “Organizational Abandonment or Redesign” (OAR) Task Force, and is Chairman of the Thoreau Middle School Social Committee. With her experience in juggling multiple tasks, committees, and personal requirements, Ms. Barham is prepared to share her secrets with you.

 

Donna Bowman, Virginia Center for School Safety and the Office of Campus Policing and Security, Virginia Department of Criminal Justice

"Keeping the Front Office Safe"
Donna is responsible for carrying out the full range of goals and objectives for the VCSS and OCPS. She supervises the development and presentation of basic and advanced training for the School Resource Officers, Campus Security Officers, School Security Officers, and other school safety professionals. Donna directs and supervises the administration of the School Safety Audit reporting program and crisis plan review certification. The Center also provides resources and technical assistance to school divisions and law enforcement agencies to assist in maintaining the safest possible schools in the Commonwealth. In her responsibilities as manager, Donna also assists in the administration of the Youth Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Project (YADAPP) conference and related YADAPP events.

Carlton Ashby

"Motivating Yourself and Others"
Mr. Ashby spoke at the 2008 Assistant Principals Conference and was very well received.  He is a motivational speaker with a true love for children.  Mr. Ashby is a kindergarten teacher at Cesar Tarrant Elementary in Hampton, Virginia with over thirty years of experience in the field of education.  In 2006, he was elected to serve on the School Board in Newport News.  Mr. Ashby’s speech will highlight the importance of building relationships with children, thinking & dreaming big for children, and the power of a positive attitude.  The speech will also address the importance of personal accountability, having  personal victory, and understanding the purpose of an "Educarer".

    Registration is $200 for one person or $175 per person if sending two or more from the same school. If registering two persons from the same school, please complete a separate registration form for each individual and list the name of the other registrant in the Comments section .

     

    ADMINISTRATORS

    Support staff make up the front lines of a school's office. Show your support of them by encouraging their attendance at this conference. Without them, what would your office be like?
