What is VAESP's
Legislative Buddy Program?
VAESP's Legislative Buddy Program’s
main focus is to get school administrators actively involved in the
legislative process while providing educational insight to the Legislators.
VAESP’s Legislative
Buddies are those who agree to develop a working relationship with one to
three of Virginia’s Legislators.
VAESP will send out
legislative updates to each Buddy to help them to continue to enhance their
relationship with the legislators.
For the Legislative Buddy
Program to be a success, we need volunteers who are dedicated to improving
Virginia’s educational system.
Why does Virginia need a
Legislative Buddy Program?
 |
To keep legislators
informed of VAESP’s legislative positions |
 |
To foster two-way
communication between legislators and Virginia’s school administrators |
 |
To provide a channel of
communication between the membership and the VAESP Board of Directors
regarding legislative positions |
What
are some tips for VAESP’s Legislative Buddy?
 |
Visit the General
Assembly’s website, legis.state.va.us, to learn who
your legislators are, as well as your legislators’ committee assignments,
voting record, and bills sponsored or supported. Look at last year’s
education bills that didn’t pass, because they will probably surface
again. |
 |
Establish an ongoing,
working relationship with your legislators. Extend invitation for
them to participate in activities at your school or in your zone. The
best time to invite legislators to your school is mid April-June and
September-October. |
 |
E-mail is a great way
to consistently communicate with your legislators. If you send letters,
please confine them to one page. |
 |
Get to know the key
legislative aide for each of your legislators. They can help you as well. |
 |
Legislators generally
don’t have a lot of time, so be prepared and focused when you do meet or
talk with them. Be clear with VAESP’s legislative positions and be
prepared to give some good examples from your school or area of the state. |
 |
Know your Zone
Director, because that person will send you e-mails about critical updated
legislative information you may want to contact your legislator about
and/or distribute to principals in your zone for them to make additional
contacts. |
Don’t let legislation pass without you, get
involved.
